Adidas reveal latest Predators in long line of the trail blazing boots that included David Beckham wearing a pair with the name ‘Charlie’ for that goal against Wimbledon
German manufacturer adidas have brought back their iconic Predator bootsPaul Pogba was part of the PREDATOR 18+launch on Wednesday morning Top range boots for men’s cost 279.95, while kids will set you back 159.95The Predator was the brainwave of former Liverpool midfielder Craig JohnstonDavid Beckham’s memorable goal against Wimbledon during the 1996 97 was scored in a borrowed pair of Predators that belonged to Rangers’ Charlie MillerBy
For those looking to emulate the Manchester United and France midfielder though, the top range boot will set you back 279.95 via adidas’ official website. The ‘cheaper’ version available on offer will cost 199.95.
For any children wishing to do the same the prices are also steep, with adidas charging 159.95 for their top range boot or 99.95 for its next model.
The top end PREDATOR 18+ boots at either kids or men’s range provide certain specs that adidas say will enable a player to dictate the game.
‘Turn your vision into control and prove your dominance with every precise pass, every minute of the game,’ is how they describe the boot.
‘With Predator, you leave nothing to chance, you’re the master of control. Keep the ball glued to your feet in these football boots, featuring a flexible adidas Primeknit upper and ultra responsive Boost.’
Adidas are promoting the boot with the tagline ‘savage control is back’ and emphasised that with their newest advert headlined by Pogba. The 24 year old is seen reliving some iconic moments of the boot before coming face to face with Mesut Ozil another adidas endorsed footballer. Johnston retired from the Beautiful Game in 1988 to help care for his seriously injured sister in his native Australia.
The midfielder, who won five league titles with the Reds, came across the idea of using rubber instead of leather to build ridges on the top of a football boot to aid control of the ball, while coaching a group of schoolchildren Down Under.
After persuading German legendary trio Franz Beckenbauer, Karl Heinz Rummenigge and Paul Breitner to be filmed while using his prototype football boots in snowy conditions adidas decided to take up the design after initially rejecting it with the rest now history.
The first Predator to be released was in 1994 with the core colours of black,
white and red being established from the off. Paul Gascoigne quickly became an endorser signing a five year deal with adidas a year later.
Beckham first got to grips with the adidas’ make during the 1996 97 season when he scored that goal at Wimbledon for United. A piece of iconic Premier League history, it’s an uncommon fact that those boots weren’t in fact his.
Beckham’s strike at Wimbledon during the 1996 97 season came in Charlie Miller’s boots
The then precocious talent wanted to try a pair of them but the only ones adidas had in his size belonged to Rangers midfielder Charlie Miller. Footage clearly shows ‘Charlie’ written on the tongue of the boot during that game at Selhurst Park.
Zinedine Zidane was another who wore the predator during his career and his virtuoso display in the 1998 World Cup final for France, when he scored twice against Brazil, was orchestrated by their Accelerator model.
As France tumbled out of the following World Cup in South Korea/Japan, 2002 is perhaps the year for adidas’ most memorable boot the Predator Mania. These boots had white rubber panels on the front of the foot in a different look to previous features. A ‘champagne’ colourway also became available which Beckham wore as England lost to eventual winners Brazil at the quarter final stage.
Over time, the Predator produced more incarnations of itself as technological advances ensued. After a hiatus, fans of the boot will be hoping it’s back for good.
The only thing is for old school fans, expect no tongue.
