HYDERABAD: The famous three stripes will start rolling out of a factory in Andhra Pradesh.
Apache Footwear Ltd, a Chinese original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of Adidas, is setting up a 12 million pairs per annum unit in the state at an investment of Rs 500 crore.
The company signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government today. The unit will come up at Tada in the Nellore district, which, incidentally, is also the location which Volkswagen is considering for its car unit in the state.
The Apache unit will employ 30,000 people,
70 % of them women. Interestingly the company employs only 19000 people at its two manufacturing plants in China.
In addition to the famous shoes the unit could also manufacturie a range of clothing and sports apparel, golf accessories, clothing, which are marketed by Adidas under different brand names.
While the Adidas brand has been ranked second in the global sporting goods market, the global giant is set to acquire its arch rival Reebok at cost of $3.8 billion. The firm has also won the sponsorship rights to the 2006 World Cup football championships to be held in Germany apart from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
If time schedules are kept in clearances and execution of the project, the company plans to double the capacity and workers employed, a statement said.
The project will be developed in a sector specific special economic zone for Footwear which is slated to come up at Tada which is just 60 kms from Chennai.
