adidas samba golf John Ross sets NFL combine record with 4
INDIANAPOLIS University of Washington receiver John Ross ran the 40 yard dash in a record setting 4.22 seconds at the NFL scouting combine Saturday, but he wasn’t wearing the right shoes to win a prize of an island.
Ross completed the feat on his first attempt, breaking Chris Johnson’s record of 4.24 in 2008.
While Ross was winding down, he appeared to hurt his left leg. The NFL Network reported that Ross wouldn’t do any more drills during the workout because of sore calves.
Ross told the league’s television network he felt good but “got tight at the end.”
Ross wore Nike shoes for the run. Adidas had offered an island to any prospect who broke Johnson’s record while wearing the company’s 2017 Adizero 5 Star 40 cleats and then agreed to endorse the company’s shoes for the 2017 18 season.
Adidas included the caveat that an island would be awarded “as soon as reasonably possible” or that the company could pay the prospect $1 million instead.
“I really can’t swim that well,
” Ross said of missing out on the island. “And I don’t have a boat, so, you know, I had to run in Nikes.”
Nike reportedly signed Ross shortly after the record run.
Ross described the run to ESPN: “I had so much adrenaline. I was nervous right before I went,
so I was up on my hands. Everything got quiet; I couldn’t hear anything. And I just took off. I held my breath and it just went on from there.”
Ross made good on a prediction he made Friday, when he told reporters: “Under 4.3. That’s what I plan to run.”
When Texas A defensive end Myles Garrett heard the time, he shook his head in admiration. Garrett is the current favorite to be picked first overall in April’s draft.
