La Crosse Boys Girls Club hires second behavioral specialist
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) The Boys and Girls Club of Greater La Crosse is expanding its efforts to help kids who might be struggling with behavioral or mental health.
The club announced Tuesday they hiring Nicole Sobkowiak as a second full time behavioral health specialist to work at the Terry Erickson Club on the city north side. The first specialist was hired a little less than two years ago and currently works at the Mathy Club on the south side.
Both specialists will now work together to help kids who are members at the Boys and Girls Club who might be struggling with emotional or behavioral concerns.
“(The goal is) to promote overall wellness and help promote that mental health is just as important as physical health, teaching kids how to deal with issues and concerns and providing support in teaching new skills so that they can maintain friendships and reduce bullying,” said Sobkowiak.
Boys and Girls Club of Greater La Crosse Senior Development Director Mike Desmond says mental and behavioral health is a growing issue in the community, and they wanted to make sure their members could get any help they need.
“If we can offer some type of support or help for kids at a young age, maybe we can do some preventative types of things so that the big thing doesn happen down the road,” said Desmond.
