National retailer Dick’s Sporting Goods unveiled its new concept store in Davenport on Friday, opening the doors of its three brands Dick’s, Field Stream and Golf Galaxy all under one roof. Although the store had a soft opening on Tuesday, Friday marked the first day of a weekend long grand opening at thecomplex located in the Davenport Commons shopping center, 5511 Elmore Ave.
The 105,000 square foot store is only the third of its kind in the nation, joining two other three in one stores in the Houston market, he said. It is more than double the size of the original Davenport store located south of 53rdStreet on Elmore. That store closed Monday.
“As a company we believe in a shop within a shop concept,” Teske said.
Within each of the three stores, sporting goods, outdoor equipment and golf inventory are displayed by brands, such as Nike, Under Armour and Adidas, as well as by sports or product type.
With the new store design, Dick’s has a new focus on customer interaction and full service, he said. Footwear, for example, now is a heavily staffed department, and inventory no longer is displayed on shelves for self service. But every shoe, in every available color, is displayed prominently on the display wall. “Customers have told us this is one of the areas they wanted more service, and we listened.”
The Field Stream and Golf Galaxy stores offer an indoor archery range and simulated golf range for shoppers to test out equipment. The golf store has PGA professionals on staff, who offer golf lessons year round.
The Pittsburgh based retailer also opened two new Dick’s stores this weekend in Queens, New York, and Hinesville, Georgia. Teske said Dick’s opens an average of 50 new stores a year. The Davenport store marked the 680th Dick’s, the 92nd Golf Galaxy and the 29th Field Stream for the chain. In Iowa, it is the eighth Dick’s, the second Golf Galaxy and the first Field Stream.
The stores, led by general manager Todd Steinhart, employ 200 associates, including employees who worked at the original store. .
Quad City shoppers flocked to the grand opening, which continues through .
“I just started at one end and went all the way through,” Carol Weiler of Blue Grass said as she pushed a cart of new golf equipment. “I’m into pickleball, bowling, golf and skiing this is my kind of place.”
Shopping with their two toddlers, 3 year old Harper and 1 year old Chance, Josh and Natalie Petersen of Maquoketa, Iowa, also were seeing all the new store had to offer.
“I like having it all in one store,” Natalie Petersen said. “We’re checking out the kayaks; that will be our big purchase.”
