DALLAS Today’s kids can’t keep up with their parents. An analysis of studies on millions of children around the world finds they don’t run as fast or as far as their parents did when they were young.

On average, it takes children 90 seconds longer to run a mile than their counterparts did 30 years ago. Heart related fitness has declined 5 per cent per decade since 1975 for children ages 9 to 17.

The American Heart Association, whose conference featured the research on Tuesday, says it’s the first to show that children’s fitness has declined worldwide over the last three decades.

It makes sense. We have kids that are less active than before

“It makes sense. We have kids that are less active than before,” said Dr. Stephen Daniels, a University of Colorado pediatrician and spokesman for the heart association.

Health experts recommend that children 6 and older get 60 minutes of moderately vigorous activity accumulated over a day. Only one third of American kids do now.

“Kids aren’t getting enough opportunities to build up that activity over the course of the day,” Daniels said. “Many schools, for economic reasons, don’t have any physical education at all. Some rely on recess” to provide exercise.

Sam Kass, a White House chef and head of first lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move program, stressed the role of schools in a speech to the conference on Monday.

“We are currently facing the most sedentary generation of children in our history,” Kass said.

The new study was led by Grant Tomkinson, an exercise physiologist at the University of South Australia. Researchers analyzed 50 studies on running fitness a key measure of cardiovascular health and endurance involving 25 million children ages 9 to 17 in 28 countries from 1964 to 2010.

The studies measured how far children could run in 5 to 15 minutes and how quickly they ran a certain distance, ranging from half a mile to two miles. Today’s kids are about 15 per cent less fit than their parents were, researchers concluded.

The changes are very similar for boys and girls and also for various ages

“The changes are very similar for boys and girls and also for various ages,” but differed by geographic region, Tomkinson said.

The decline in fitness seems to be levelling off in Europe,
beckenbauer adidas Kids around the world are slower runners than their parents were
Australia and New Zealand, and perhaps in the last few years in North America. However, it continues to fall in China, and Japan never had much falloff fitness has remained fairly consistent there. About 20 million of the 25 million children in the studies were from Asia.

In China, annual fitness test data show the country’s students have become slower and fatter over the past several decades.

Experts and educators blame an obsession with academic testing scores for China’s competitive college admissions as well as a proliferation of indoor entertainment options such gaming and web surfing for the decline.

China’s Education Ministry data show that in 2010 male college students ran 1,000 metres (yards) 14 to 15 seconds slower on average than male students who ran a decade earlier. Female students slowed by about 12 seconds in running 800 metres.

Motoaki Nito of the Sports and Youth Bureau at Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology said there had been a decline in physical fitness among youth since the 1980s.

To turn that around, the government has urged municipalities and schools to promote youth fitness. Nito said that this had resulted in a gradual increase of physical strength, which while not equal to levels seen in the 1980s, had reversed the trend.

Tomkinson and Daniels said obesity likely plays a role, since it makes it harder to run or do any aerobic exercise. Too much time watching television and playing video games and unsafe neighbourhoods with not enough options for outdoor play also may play a role, they said.

Other research discussed global declines in activity.

Fitness is “pretty poor in adults and even worse in young people,” especially in the United States and eastern Europe, said Dr. Ulf Ekelund of the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences in Oslo, Norway.

“I have a knife to your neck. Don’t make a sound. Get out of bed and come with me, or I will kill you and your family.”

Elizabeth Smart said she heard the strange man’s voice and felt something cold across her neck. On a witness stand in a Salt Lake City courtroom, she recounted his words with a calm composure belying her fright more than eight years ago. It was, she said, the early hours of June 5, 2002; she was a 14 year old in red pajamas who was about to be taken from her bedroom as her younger sister slept nearby for what would be a nine month long nightmare as a captive of the man on trial, Brian David Mitchell. She was the third witness of the day, after her mother and sister had testified, detailing an abduction that horrified and fascinated the country. Her dramatic account was supposed to have occurred last week, but the proceedings had come to an abrupt halt last Thursday, Nov. 4, when the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals granted a temporary stay to consider the defense’s request for a change of venue. The request was denied. (See how the Elizabeth Smart trial hit a snag.)

And so Elizabeth Smart is finally telling her story. The defendant, she said on Monday, instructed her to get her tennis shoes. He then led her out of her parents’ house in the affluent Federal Heights neighborhood of Salt Lake City, through an undeveloped back lot behind the residence, before shoving her behind a bush as a police car passed by. According to Elizabeth, the defendant said, “If this is the work of God, then let this police car pass without finding us.” Then he told her that if she didn’t stay down, she would be killed. The car passed, and for three to five hours, Elizabeth would continue her journey at knifepoint, walking up a trailhead until it merged into a dry stream bed. They then ascended a steep mountain to a camp.

Elizabeth told the jury that upon arriving at camp, she was greeted by Wanda Barzee, Mitchell’s wife. She followed Barzee into the tent. The woman instructed her to remove her red pajamas. Elizabeth refused. “She said that if I didn’t take them off, she would have the defendant come in and rip them off,” said Elizabeth before telling the jury that she removed them as well as her underwear when she was threatened again. Barzee left as Elizabeth cried in the tent. Then the defendant entered and performed a marriage ceremony to which Elizabeth screamed, “No!” “He said if I ever screamed like that again, he would duct tape my mouth.” After the “marriage ceremony,” Mitchell forced Elizabeth to the ground and began to rape her. “I tried to fight him off me,” Elizabeth said. “A 14 year old girl against a grown man doesn’t even out so much.” (See TIME’s story about Elizabeth Smart’s missing nine months.)

When she awoke the next morning, a metal cable was fastened to her ankle. It was attached to another cable, part of a tether between two trees. “He said he was going to take away the temptation from running away from him,” Elizabeth said. She then described how, during her time in captivity, she used a bucket as a bathroom and was raped almost daily even as she received frequent instruction that Mitchell was a prophet. She was forced to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes and marijuana. “I felt like I had a burden the size of a mountain to carry around with me the rest of my life,” Elizabeth said.

As she and her family testified, Mitchell viewed the proceedings from an adjacent room after once again being removed for disrupting the court by singing hymns. He has sung at every proceeding since the trial began and has been removed each time on orders of the presiding judge, Dale Kimball. According to the opening statement of Mitchell’s defense lawyer, the defendant began using hymns around 1994 “to drown out his co workers and not deal with others.” (See the top 10 unsolved crimes.)

The defense is out to prove that Mitchell is not guilty by reason of insanity at the time of the abduction. “Very little or no disagreement exists as to what happened,” said Mitchell’s lawyer Parker Douglas. “We have general disagreement about why it happened.” “To determine justice,” he told the jury in his opening statement, “you must not only determine what happened but also why it happened.” He focused almost entirely on Mitchell’s life prior to the alleged abduction of Elizabeth Smart his history of intense and erratic behavior, his descent into extremist fundamental religions and finally his belief that he was a prophet who needed “to restore the law of celestial marriage plural marriage,” Douglas told the jury.

Insanity is a difficult argument. After years of legal wrangling, Mitchell was declared competent to stand trial in March 2010. Barzee was put on trial after a Utah judge approved forcibly medicating her with antipsychotic drugs to restore her mental competence. She pleaded guilty to charges of kidnapping in November 2009 and is currently serving a 15 year sentence.

Earlier in the day, Lois Smart, Elizabeth’s mother, took the stand to recall how the family first met Mitchell. It was the fall of 2001, and Lois had gone school shopping with her six children at the downtown mall. “He was a clean cut, well kept man that was down on his luck and needed to get some help,” Lois said. She asked him if he was looking for work before handing him $5 and her husband Ed’s name and phone number. According to Lois, at the time of their meeting, he was not singing or preaching and never mentioned religion. Mitchell went to work at the Smarts’ home, fixing a leaky roof and raking leaves for the family. It was during this time that Mitchell introduced himself to Lois as Immanuel. ” never mentioned that he was a prophet. He didn’t seem like he was mentally ill,” Lois said.

Lois then recounted the last night the Smarts spent with their daughter: the awards ceremony they attended for Elizabeth’s eighth grade graduation, the potatoes that Lois burnt while rushing to cook dinner and how she opened the window to the right of the kitchen sink to get rid of the smoke. before retiring to bed. In the early hours of June 5, 2002, Lois was awakened by her younger daughter Mary Katherine. “She came into our bedroom, and she had a baby blanket wrapped around her shoulders and her head. She reminded me of a scared rabbit,” Lois explained. “She said, ‘Elizabeth is gone.’ ”

The family checked the bedroom and family room and discovered that the screen of the kitchen window to the right of the sink had been cut in a U shape. Elizabeth was nowhere to be found. “My heart sank, and I yelled out to Ed to call 911 she is gone!” said Lois.

On the stand, Mary Katherine focused on the night Elizabeth was taken. “I stayed in bed. I was scared. I couldn’t do anything. I was just shocked, petrified. I didn’t know what to do,” Mary Katherine told the jury, “knowing someone had come into my bedroom and taken my sister.” Elizabeth is expected to return to the stand Tuesday to finish her narrative and to be questioned by Mitchell’s defense.

Ms Ayling, of Coulsdon, south London, is said to have been drugged with the horse tranquilliser ketamine and transported in a bag to Borgial, an isolated village near Turin, before being released on July 17, according to Italian police.

She was then detained for six days while her captors reportedly tried to auction her on the dark web as a sex slave.

But her kidnappers eventually took her to the British consulate in Milan despite receiving neither payment nor a ransom, with the reason later given that they hadlearnedshe was a mother.

Ms Ayling’s lawyer acknowledged that aspects of the case seemed bizarre. He said investigators initially had “more than understandable doubts” about the model’s story.

“It seems incredible,” Francesco Pesce said. “A man kidnaps, together with others, a girl, and after a week, citing particular reasons, accompanies her inside a consulate . (and) practically hands her over to police.

“This at first was doubted also by investigators, but the story later turned out to be true.”

He said: “She was told that she was going to be sold to somebody in the Middle East for sex. She was told that people were there watching her and waiting to kill her if she tried anything.

“So she thought that the best idea was to go along with it and to be nice, in a way, to her captor.”

Milan police officer Lorenzo Bucossi said Herba described himself as a “paid killer” for a mercenary organisation. Others have suggested he is a fantasist.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Milan deputy prosecutor Paolo Storari said: “Fantasist or not, what is clear is that he is a very dangerous man who drugged his victim as soon as she was kidnapped and put her inside a large travel bag in the boot of a car.

“His version of events is barely credible but clearly he does not deny that he was with her for the time she was missing.”

adidas wiki Kid’s as old as eight can’t tie their laces

It’s something considered to be a basic life skill and a part of everyday life but pre schoolers are more likely to be able to use an iPad than tie their shoelaces.

An international survey of 2200 mothers from Australia, New Zealand, the US and Europe has found children motor skills like tying shoelaces or riding a bike have been overtaken by tech knowledge.

According to the study, conducted by security company AVG, 19 percent of children aged two to five could use a smartphone while only nine percent could tie their laces.

Experts warn that parents who don teach their children how to tie their laces are hindering their development.

In addition, parents who give their children Velcro shoe alternatives have also been said to be delaying developmental milestones.

Manager of Athletes Foot at Springfield Central,

schools require lace up shoes, kids can feel self conscious, Mr Davis said.

Child care centres are also encouraging parents to teach their little ones how to tie their laces as it is another great way to bond with their child.

Director of Amaze Childcare Centre, Lucy Cook told News Corp there just isn enough time in one day to be tying every child shoes.

is a skill that is needed for school because it takes up a lot of time if the teacher is tying 25 pairs of shoelaces regularly throughout the school day, Ms Cook said.

adidas fleece Kickstarter to save Dorothy’s ruby red slippers at Smithsonian

WASHINGTON Dorothy’s ruby red slippers from Wizard of Oz are one of the most popular attractions at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, but they’re nearly 80 years old and showing their age.

That prompted the museum to launch a Kickstarter campaign to raise money from the public for a conservation program for the slippers with agoal to raise $300,000.

“The Smithsonian is a federal trust, so we get a generous appropriation every year to keep the lights on and pay the salaries here. But for exhibitions and projects like this, we require outside funding, curator Ryan Lintelman toldWTOP.

“So since these slippers belong to the American people, we’re asking them to help us make sure that they’ll last for generations to come,” he said.

Donations for these sorts of projects often come from large benefactors, but the Smithsonian formed a partnership with Kickstarter last year as a way to let small donors show their support.

The first campaign last year for the Air and Space Museum raised more than $700,000 for restoration and conservation of Neil Armstrong’s Apollo spacesuit. That conservation program is currently underway.

Dorothy’s slippers were anonymously donated to the National Museum of American History in 1979 and have been on continuous display ever since.

The fact that the slippers have survived this long is a bit of luck.

“The ruby slippers were made just to last through the filming of Wizard of Oz, and after 80 years, we all start to show our age, Lintelman said. “They’ve suffered from exposure to light and changes in humidity and temperature and just old age. There are some threads fraying, sequins are starting to fall off,” he said.

Once the project starts, conservators will conduct a survey to determine how long they’ll need to be off display, and then clean, repair and stabilize them. They will also build a state of the art case to protect them from any further damage.

The Smithsonian’s version of the slippers aren’t the only ones in existence: They were commercially available shoes that were dyed red and a mesh with sequins was applied to them. There were several different pairs made. The slippers at this museum are the only pair that remain in public hands and that are on view for the public to see.

The ruby slippers will go on permanent display as part of an exhibition the museum is doing in 2018 about American popular culture.

The slippers will remain on public display until after the presidential inauguration. The museum has set up a special area so visitors can take selfies with the slippers. The Kickstarter campaign runs through Nov. 16.

Pictured above: Ireland out half Ronan O’Gara takes a shot at the North Terrace goal as the squad’s kickers get through their last 6 Nations practice at the old Lansdowne Road.

O’Gara lines up another shot under the watching eye of Ireland kicking coach Mark Tainton. It has been quite a week so far for young mister O’Gara he turned 29 on Tuesday and for the occasion, had his runners ‘destroyed’ by Brian O’Driscoll, forcing O’Gara to wear dress shoes with his tracksuit for a good part of the week!

On a more memorable note, Saturday will mark the 40th occasion that O’Gara has started a Test match together with his old school mate Peter Stringer as his half back partner.

In an interview in the Irish Times, Stringer said of the duo’s relationship: “He (Rog) just seems to be like the only player I’ve ever played with! But it’s good, like. It does give you that added confidence knowing where the chat is coming from and knowing the type of ball he wants, because it does take a while to adjust to out players in that position (at out half).

“Even at training, if some other guys have to step to first receiver, they’re not used to a certain type of pass or something, they might just want it standing or a couple of yards in front or whatever. They’re the fine things that can make a difference, when they have to be spot on for his transfer to the next guy, because it’s just a split second with defences these days. It’s good and it does give that added confidence knowing he’s there.”

The Scottish Test will be O’Gara’s 59th in an Irish jersey. His record as Ireland’s all time top points scorer currently stands at 579.

The sun shines down on O’Gara as he kicks towards the North Terrace. Saturday will be the Corkman’s 7th Test against Scotland since he made his debut, alongside Stringer, against the Scots in 2000. The Irish number 10 is the top scorer in the 2006 RBS 6 Nations after the opening three weekends. Coincidentally, O’Gara has scored 16 points in each of Ireland’s three games so far against Italy, France and Wales for a 48 point haul.
